Living with Brachymetatarsia

by: Madelyn R. on Thu, Feb 21 2008

For years, brachymetatarsia has been passed down through my family. Unfortunately, I ended up with it but it skipped my mom’s generation. I am the only one in my family with it.

When we started swimming I didn’t want to take off my shoes and when I did I didn’t want to take off my socks. When I did, everyone just stared and my best friend even made fun of my feet for weeks. I use to think all day and night, it’s just not fair. When the weather gets warm and everyone wears sandals and flip flops I wear big shoes and socks, just so no one can see my toes. I hated going barefoot even around my family.

One wierd thing is everytime I see someone barefoot I say, “You have such perfect toes” and they look at me like i am an alien from jupiter. But you just notice those kind of things. One day at the beginning of this year, my mom saw my toe and she began ranting on and on. She then made me later show it to all the doctors at the office, they then looked at it like it was a terrorist or something and they wanted everyone to see it. IT was EMBARASSING!!!

So then I had to see a podiatrist who referred me to another podiatrist and now, I have one foot fixed after three months and another on the way in April.

IT is very hard, I would never wish this on anyone
