Phase II

I have brachymetatarsia… or should I say its soon to be a thing of the past. On January 12th I had surgery and in 3 months the procedure will be completed. I have an external fixator on my forth toe and have pins in toes 3 and 5.

The pins are to straighten the toes that have become crooked due to my fourth toe being short. At this point, I cannot drive, have trouble getting around, and I am on crutches. Many of my friends are helping me to take care of some of the things I have to do, but let me say that I am very excited.

For 24 years (some time less than that because we all know that we didn’t learn that we had it until about age 8) I have dealt with hiding my toes, not being sexy enough because I could not wear sandals/(some) sexy heels and occasionally being starred or laughed at when I had the courage to show my feet.

I am glad that I had the surgery done and do not mind a minute of the discomfort or inconvenience that I’m experiencing. Finally, I am calling this phase two because this is the second time I have tried the procedure (including one last year this time that was a failure due to inexperience of the doc).

If you are truly bothered like I was, please see a podiatrist about getting the procedure.

I’m 56 years old and no one ever told me that my short second toes were a congenital deformity until this week when I went to a podiatrist for the first time in twenty years. (Twenty years ago I surgery on my left foot for a bunion and Morton’s neuroma.) [more..]
