Orthotics success story

I was diagnosed with neuromas in both feet 11 years ago shortly after beginning dance. My pain was severe for a few months, but I knew of too many unsuccessful surgery stories that I wanted to exhaust all other options. I saw several different doctors, and one finally suggested orthotics rather than surgery. For the first six or eight months, I wore them always. Then I gradually reduced to wearing them for dance only. Then I moved from the hard large orthotics to smaller softer style. I had to increase my shoe size by 1/2 from that time forward and change to a wider shoe style (and one with a strap for dance because my heel tended to slip with the orthotics), but could eventually dance in a small heel with the soft bendable orthotics. I still wear them in my dance shoes 11 yrs later and have managed to successfully control the condition in this way. (they need to be adjusted or remade every few years because they flatten down) Occasionally, I will feel the neuroma if I shift my foot sideways accidentally when I’m barefoot, but for the most part I don’t think about them any more. Suggestion: Ask around and find a retail orthotics maker with a good reputation. Getting them through a doctors office will not necessarily be of higher quality. You need someone who can work with you to make adjustments. It may take a while to get the fit exactly right.
