Where did I get RA from?

by: CAW on Wed, Mar 26 2008

After walking around with knee swelling and pain thinking it’s just arthritis of the knees. I purchased a cane to help me keep the other knee from the stress of over working it. I saw my primary doctor who sent me to physical therapy it helped because it gave me back my confidence to get out and move around even in pain after laying up in bed for a few months. Now I’m seeing a Rheumatologist, who did extensive lab work and found out I have Rheumatoid Arthritis

I was glad it wasn’t anything more serious however, when I read more about it, I see that it is serious. When I read about the treatment. I was concerned because of the side effects. I even told my family I did’t want to take the medicine. However, I know it’s for my good to stop further damage to my joints. My Rheumatologist told me on yesterday that I don’t need to prolong having knee replacement because of the continual damage could make it difficult for the replacement. Overall, I’m feeling better right now with taking the Prednisone which I can only be on for two more weeks. I’ll be starting on the Methotrexate on today. I’m just looking forward to feeling like myself again on a regular basis. I hope this helps someone.

I am amazed to this day that very few people know what Rheumatoid Arthritis is. Even my hand doctors who were splinting me, my radiologists who were giving me knee braces with a script, even my my own father, a Doctor (!) and mother (a nurse!) could not understand why I was so crippled. I was diagnosed with Ra just about 4 months ago. To say the least it was a shock. I though the stiffness, swelling and pain were just my age catching up with me. [more..]
