MY STORY FEB 2007-Well, it started back in Febuary 2007 when a car slid on ice and headed for my LandRover. As a complete reaction…I tried to stop it…with my hand. I thought I was ok and later went to the ER for Xrays. The Xrays came back negative for a fracture..1600.00 later.. So, I did what anyone else would do…Give it time to heal…guess it was a sprain. OCT 2007-Well…after about 8 months, and getting health insurace…I decided to get my wrist reevaluated. It was still slightly swollen and seemed now to be getting worse. I had Xrays taken again and this time again showed no fracture..yet some abnomral bone density. They recommended an MRI ,,more tests…more money. NOV 2007-Now, the MRI results are in…I had a fractured scaphoid (wrist) done. But it seems that there was a loss of blood supply which caused Avascular Necrosis. The bone had died. I needed surgery…and it was complicated. DEC 2007-I had surgery to remove the scaphoid bone and underwent a four corner fusion. I had 3 screws place in to hold four wrist bones from collapsing or (falling down). I had stitches removed and was placed in a cast for 6 weeks. Jan 2008-I had my cast removed and started physical Therapy It was very painful, but I was on the road to recovery…or so I thought. Feb 2008- After continued severe pain in my hand and wrist..discoloration of my skin….extreme temperature changes…and severe skin sensitivity, I was diagnosed with RSD What is it? Reflex Sympathetic Dystophy. It is a condition where as the nervious system continues to send pain messages to the brain. My doctor described it well. When you put your hand on something HOT…the message is sent to the brain…YOUR HAND IS BURNING! I almost felt like I was loosing my mind…There is no cure …only hope that maybe if treated right away with nerve blocks and medication…there is hope for remission. March 2008- I have been scheduled to receive 4 Stellate Ganglion Blocks once a week for 4 weeks. These injections are given in the neck to the back of the spine into the sympathetic nerves…in hopes to numb the messages being sent to the brain. I have received 2 injections…with no response to the treatment. My RT hand is 76 degrees F while my arm remains 90 degrees F. The burning sensation and stabbing pain in my wrist continues. My hand is persistantly discolored a purple/blue. I have now been placed on another medication called Neurontin along with my Oxycodone. I am also scheduled for an EMG (peripheral nerve test) at the end of the month. I continue PT 2 times a week and follow up with my Ortho surgeon monthly…along with a Physiciast. It appears that on my latest Xray, a wrist bone above the one that was removed Comments
