freezing legs
by: L. W. on Fri, Mar 06 2009

I had surgery 2 yrs. Ago. Vein surgery the kind with the new laser technique. 3 hrs of surgery 10 holes in my leg much bruising and bleeding under the skin. A strange symptom occurred that the drs. Said they never heard of. My legs started freezing. Like I was sitting in a tub of icy water. yes the surgery was only on the right leg but the left was freezing as well.

This went on for several weeks. I would heap blankets upon them wasn’t allowed direct heat. After an hr. Or two they would get warm. I had swelling that went away in the knee area. I had pain that would catch me kinda unaware that would make me yell. Stabbing pain. I had alot of burning pain as well. Had more of the same surgery on left only much more compared to 1st surgery. each time I was put to sleep. The same freezing began again. It lasted a few weeks as well but wasn’t quite as . Intense. Over a year later drs. Said there was a very rare complication with the first initial surgery so I underwent a third surgery. I had 3 surgery within 14 months of time. Again the freezing began it lasted about 4 to6 weeks.

My leg has never felt the same. It stings and burns and is sensitive and tender to touch. It is now 24 months since the first surgery and 1 year since the last and guess whats back out of the blue. I have begun to have the freezing legs almost every day. I think during the summer I didn’t have the freezing. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and sjogreen’s and arthritis. None of these explain the freezing as far as I can tell. I had the freezing long before the other symptoms. Then again my painful legs were thought to be from the varicose veins. Only after the surgery they really didn’t feel better I just felt like I traded one pain for another. It took a good 8 months or more for the bad burning and stinging pain to really lessen from the 1st surgery. All I know is the freezing seems to be worse this winter when it hit again. I don’t go out much when it is real cold cause it seems to maybe trigger a worse episode.

The freezing really grates on my nerves. It is like a cold burn if that makes any sense. Intense and can last the whole day if I don’t stop and warm them with throws and heating pads. If I step outside and I feel cold I get out the hair dryer to warm me and my clothing up quickly. I am only guessing this to be some kind of nerve problem I have been stupid for not reporting this to my drs. It comes and goes whether I am sitting alot or walking or standing. I feel like I’m losing it sometimes. Like no one will believe me or understand.

I know I’m depressed some and battle fatigue and pain from the fibro and arthritis. I wonder has anyone ever heard of their surgery especially major vein surgery cause anything like this. Is there any hope for me. I am hoping that maybe when the weather warms it will be better. It has affected the quality of my life. No one told me that this surgery had any complication like this. I write this hoping maybe some one out is like me and can help. I am stressed and miss my job I gave up shortly before the 3rd surgery. Some days I function pretty well other days I am not able to complete anything. I want the freezing to go away the fibro and arthritis and sjogreens’s are enough to deal with or is this all related some how. Help.
