Living with RSD for many years

Hi,

I injured my legs in an accident. I had surgery on both of them. After going to several specialists, I was finally diagnosed with RSD in 1988.

I am not sure if it was the combination of the surgery or just the injuries to my legs that caused the RSD It really doesn’t matter.

The fact is that my doctors and I have tried many different things to deal with the RSD. They range from weak to strong medications, Bier Blocks, a TENS Unit, Lumbar Sympathetic Nerve Blocks, physical therapy and now epidurals.

The good news is that in 1997, the pain diminished to the point where I barely felt it in either leg or foot. I was thoroughly enjoying life back then.

In 2005, I broke my toe. Back came my RSD in both legs and feet. It really never left but back it came with a vengeance.

I just finished having four epidurals in the past eight days. It is difficult to walk due to the burning pain in both of my feet and legs.

Through determination, medication, nerve blocks, the support of family and friends, I am able to deal with this disease. It is helpful to have someone who you can really talk to RSD about and they understand it.

RSD is very complicated. Most people may may not know what you are going through and the enormous amount of pain that you have unless you take the time to really sit down and talk to them about it.

I always say that I don’t want your sympathy, just your understanding and to know that you care.I remind myself that there are other people who are worse off than me. People who can’t walk and would give anything to be able to do so. Therefore, I try not to complain too much.

I deal with what has been handed to me. I keep up on the latest news about RSD. I do know what those of you who are just finding out that you have RSD are going through.

Don’t give up! I haven’t and look how long I’ve had it. There is always hope for a cure.

Just take one day at a time. That’s what I do.

Good luck and hang in there!
